Mike Tyson To Box Exhibition Bout On PRIDE Show?

Retired Tyson planning exhibition bouts

By KEVIN IOLE
REVIEW-JOURNAL

Former heavyweight champion, 40, to train at Aladdin for series of exhibition bouts

Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson has no plans to return as an active boxer, but will fight a series of up to 10 exhibition matches in the next several months, sources close to Tyson said Friday.

Tyson, 40, will train for those bouts at the Aladdin. The source said a ring will be set up in the casino and Tyson will work out in a public area for an hour a day.

An Aladdin spokesperson said talks are ongoing and declined further comment.

Tyson, who is staying at the Aladdin, could not be reached for comment. But multiple sources said he will have a news conference next week in Las Vegas to discuss the venture.

Tyson is expected to box an exhibition on a Pride Fighting Championship mixed martial arts card, though the date and site are not determined. Pride has a card scheduled for the Thomas & Mack Center on Oct. 21, though Tyson reportedly will not fight on that show.

However, Tyson, who has not competed since June 11, 2005, when he quit on his stool after the sixth round against journeyman Kevin McBride, isn’t planning to join Pride.

Tyson, who at age 20 in 1986 became the youngest man to win the heavyweight title, has long been a fan of mixed martial arts. He was the guest referee on a card in Manchester, England, on March 18, though the bout lasted about a minute.

Asked by ring announcer Bas Rutten, a former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight champion, whether he would fight again, Tyson said no.

“My fighting days are over, but I love and enjoy watching cagefighting, though,” Tyson told Rutten.

Tyson served as a color analyst on the international feed of the WBC heavyweight title fight between Hasim Rahman and Oleg Maskaev on Aug. 12 at the Thomas & Mack Center.

That deal, which reportedly paid Tyson $20,000, was arranged by the Los Angeles-based Sports Placement Service. Harlan J. Werner, its president and CEO, could not be reached Friday.

Tyson was 50-6 with 44 knockouts as a pro, but was 5-5 with two no-contests in his final 12 bouts. He ended his career by losing two in a row and three of four.

Update On Georges St. Pierre’s Injury & Fight With Matt Hughes

The following is an exclusive update on the Georges St. Pierre-Matt Hughes II fight situation from Sherdog.com:

“Rush” to Recovery: St. Pierre to Test Injured Groin

Saturday, August 19, 2006
by Josh Gross (joshg@sherdog.com)

Georges St. Pierre should know by Wednesday evening if his showdown with UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes is still on, the Canadian’s manager told Sherdog.com Saturday.

St. Pierre pulled his groin on August 3 and has been limited in training for September 23’s title fight, a bout marking his second shot at Hughes’ belt.

On August 10 St. Pierre’s camp notified the UFC about the injury, which a physiotherapist in Montreal had initially told the powerful 170-pounder he’d need four weeks to fully recover from.

St. Pierre has since flown out to Las Vegas, where he helped corner Jonathan Goulet during Thursday’s UFC Fight Night, to work with a specialist that has helped Wayne Gretzky and Tiger Woods.

Patry indicated St. Pierre is 95 percent and has continued to work on his cardio and boxing during the down period. The injury has made grappling difficult, which is problematic considering it is Hughes’ strength.

The decision on St. Pierre’s participation will come after “Rush” pushes himself hard Wednesday evening. Patry said he believes the fight will happen and St. Pierre will return to Montreal on Sept. 25 with the belt around his waist.

In the event that St. Pierre cannot fight, a member of the champion’s camp told Sherdog.com, the UFC has started to work on back-up plans, including a rematch between Hughes and B.J. Penn.

Cage Warriors “Portsmouth” Cancelled

A message from Cage Warriors President Dougie Truman

It is with great regret that i have to once again announce that the Cage Warriors Fighting Championships have had to cancel their return to Portsmouth on September 2nd.  This is due to a new Councillor who has taken over the licensing department at Portsmouth City Council and has raised issues concerning Combat sports being held in Portsmouth.  This is largely due to a recent “Wrestling” event staged at the Moutbatton centre where a 15 year old boy was cut badly & injured.

We hoped we could negotiate through this in time, but sadly that is not the case, as the local Council are very adament at present and will not to allow any combat sports continuing in Portsmouth.  I am trying to schedule a meeting next week with Council officials to argue our case and I will keep you all up to date with any developments and may even call upon you at some point to voice your own views.

Many apologies to you all especially the fighters. We have tried to notify all the fighters before making this announcement, my especially to any of you who we have not yet contacted.

Regards Dougie Truman

President of the Cage Warriors Fighting Championships

MMA International Injury Report

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competitions were introduced in the United States with the first Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in 1993.

In 2001, Nevada and New Jersey sanctioned MMA events after requiring a series of rule changes. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of injury in professional MMA fighters.

Data from all professional MMA events that took place between September 2001 and December 2004 in the state of Nevada were obtained from the Nevada Athletic Commission. Medical and outcome data from events were analyzed based on a pair-matched case-control design.

Both conditional and unconditional logistic regression models were used to assess risk factors for injury. A total of 171 MMA matches involving 220 different fighters occurred during the study period. There were a total of 96 injuries to 78 fighters. Of the 171 matches fought, 69 (40.3%) ended with at least one injured fighter.

The overall injury rate was 28.6 injuries per 100 fight participations or 12.5 injuries per 100 competitor rounds. Facial laceration was the most common injury accounting for 47.9% of all injuries, followed by hand injury (13.5%), nose injury (10.4%), and eye injury (8.3%).

With adjustment for weight and match outcome, older age was associated with significantly increased risk of injury. The most common conclusion to a MMA fight was a technical knockout (TKO) followed by a tap out. The injury rate in MMA competitions is compatible with other combat sports involving striking. The lower knockout rates in MMA compared to boxing may help prevent brain injury in MMA events.

About “Never Submit”
“Never Submit” is a movie which portrays the thrill of victory and agony of defeat within the sport. The story is set in a tournament setting similar to the movie “Bloodsport” but rather than exploiting the sport as underground no-holds-barred fighting, it seeks to portray the sport in a realistic and positive light. The movie will be an inspirational tale similar to “Rocky.” Unlike “Rocky,” the lead character is an educated young man, rather than a beaten-down punch-drunk fighter. Mr. Hergott comments: “MMA is a very intellectual sport. A physical chess match. I want to portray the sport and its fighters as intelligent rather than dumb brawlers, as is often done in other movies.”
