Liddell vs Silva not happening until UFC and Pride agree money

Monday, September 18th, 2006

It's still fight a worth making and one that mixed martial arts fans want to see. But if comments this week from UFC boss Dana White hold true, it's a fight we won't see any time soon.

The announcement at UFC 61 of a Chuck Liddell – Wanderlei Silva throw-down sent a buzz through the MMA world. The Iceman vs. The Axe Murderer had action-fight-of-the-year written all over it.

As White whet our appetites for the duel, the caveat was made that the fall tilt was contingent on Liddell disposing of Babalu Sobral (done) and Silva getting through PRIDE's Final Conflict Absolute (ah, not-so-done).

Silva was walloped by Cro Cop at FCA and, as far as White's concerned, since Silva finished that fight on his back, he doesn't deserve a shot at the UFC's top dog.

"It kind of defeats the purpose now. The guy just got, literally, destroyed. They're (PRIDE) still saying we can do a fight in November. They can't do a fight in November. The athletic commission would put them on suspension for 90 days. The guy got knocked out cold. First, he got beaten to death, then he got knocked out cold. There's no way the guy could fight again in a month and a half. Plus, he just lost."

White's not shy. You have to respect his in-your-face sound bites and the way he defends UFC turf.

I agree with White's assessment about Silva's readiness. I don't have an M.D. after my name, but how could it be safe for him to fight in November after the beat down he suffered? No, it wasn't a 20-minute shellacking, but Cro Cop did a lot of damage in a hurry. For that reason, I question the logic of near-term fisticuffs.

Silva's loss, however, is a non-factor for me. He lost to a heavyweight; he's still a champion and the intrigue of PRIDE vs. UFC, with two of the biggest names in the sport, warrants the battle. It would draw a huge gate and do massive PPV business.

This much is clear – the fight won't happen this year. White said Liddell's next opponent is the winner of Tito Ortiz vs. Ken Shamrock, although I can't see how you can give Shamrock a shot at the Iceman. If Liddell wins that battle, White speculated that Quinton "Rampage" Jackson could be next.

Tyson and Pride

Monday, August 21st, 2006

On the last stop of their 3-day media tour, Pride Fighting Championships saved the best for last. At the Fox Sports Grill in Irvine, California last night, the promotion announced two of the pairings for their October 21st, United States debut, as well as, many of the other fighters slated to participate.

In somewhat of a surprise move, Pride announced that heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko will face Mark “The Hammer Coleman and Middleweight Grand Prix champion Mauricio “Shogun Rua will square off with Coleman’s teammate Kevin Randleman.

With the already announced participation of Coleman and Rua, it was highly speculated that the two would be paired up when Pride debuts in Las Vegas. Rua has been very vocal about wanting a rematch since being upset by Coleman in February earlier this year. Pride instead opted for the Emelianenko-Coleman rematch.

Perhaps the biggest surprise at the press conference was the attendance and announcement of former undisputed heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson. Apparently Tyson has entered into some sort of agreement with the Japanese promoter.

Neither he nor Pride would give any specific details as to their partnership when Tyson was asked if he will be fighting for the promotion in the future. But just his presence alone at the press conference is sure to ignite plenty of speculation.

Also announced, although no further pairings were stated, were the intended participation of several other Pride stars for “The Real Deal fight card at the Thomas & Mack Center. The card now also features Josh Barnett, Kazuyuki Fujita, Mirko “Cro Cop Filipovic, Phil Baroni, Vitor Belfort, and middleweight champion Wanderlei Silva.

With UFC president Dana White’s recent comments in a Canadian interview in regards to an already announced bout between UFC champion Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva in the UFC in November, “I don’t even know if Silva’s going to happen… the Japanese are very hard to do business with and you never know what’s going to happen,â€? and Pride’s announcement of Silva on their October 21st U.S. debut, it now seems apparent that the bout between the two champions is off.

2 Major Bouts Confirmed For PRIDE’s October U.S. Debut

Sunday, August 20th, 2006

A press conference was held earlier today in Japan by Dreamstage Entertainment to announce two confirmed bouts for the upcoming U.S. debut of PRIDE at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada on October 21st.The two confirmed bouts see a Heavyweight rematch between kingpin Fedor Emelianenko and Mark “The Hammer” Coleman, as well as somewhat of a revenge match as Hammer House star Kevin “The Monster” Randleman battles the returning Chute Boxe’r Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

Also at the press conference was boxing phenomenon “Iron” Mike Tyson, whom DSE offered no comment about regarding whether or not he’d fight for the promotion. As we already reported on the “PRIDE Newsboard” earlier today, Tyson is reportedly going to be boxing an exhibition bout at an upcoming PRIDE show, although it is believed to be a different show than the U.S. debut the press conference was held for.

Retired Tyson planning exhibition bouts

Former heavyweight champion, 40, to train at Aladdin for series of exhibition bouts

Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson has no plans to return as an active boxer, but will fight a series of up to 10 exhibition matches in the next several months, sources close to Tyson said Friday.

Tyson, 40, will train for those bouts at the Aladdin. The source said a ring will be set up in the casino and Tyson will work out in a public area for an hour a day.

An Aladdin spokesperson said talks are ongoing and declined further comment.

Tyson, who is staying at the Aladdin, could not be reached for comment. But multiple sources said he will have a news conference next week in Las Vegas to discuss the venture.

Tyson is expected to box an exhibition on a Pride Fighting Championship mixed martial arts card, though the date and site are not determined. Pride has a card scheduled for the Thomas & Mack Center on Oct. 21, though Tyson reportedly will not fight on that show.

However, Tyson, who has not competed since June 11, 2005, when he quit on his stool after the sixth round against journeyman Kevin McBride, isn’t planning to join Pride.

Tyson, who at age 20 in 1986 became the youngest man to win the heavyweight title, has long been a fan of mixed martial arts. He was the guest referee on a card in Manchester, England, on March 18, though the bout lasted about a minute.

Asked by ring announcer Bas Rutten, a former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight champion, whether he would fight again, Tyson said no.

“My fighting days are over, but I love and enjoy watching cagefighting, though,” Tyson told Rutten.

Tyson served as a color analyst on the international feed of the WBC heavyweight title fight between Hasim Rahman and Oleg Maskaev on Aug. 12 at the Thomas & Mack Center.

That deal, which reportedly paid Tyson $20,000, was arranged by the Los Angeles-based Sports Placement Service. Harlan J. Werner, its president and CEO, could not be reached Friday.

Tyson was 50-6 with 44 knockouts as a pro, but was 5-5 with two no-contests in his final 12 bouts. He ended his career by losing two in a row and three of four.

Pride Final Conflict Poster

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

The posters for PRIDE FINAL CONFLICT, the final round of the 2006 open weight grand prix to be held at Saitama Super Arena on September 10th, has finally been completed.

On July 13th, approximately 500 fans gathered at the PRIDE Dreamers dojo to have their faces photographed. Those photographs were then used to create the faces of four competitors in the September 10th PRIDE FINAL CONFLICT posters: Mirko Filipovic, Wanderlei Silva, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Josh Barnett. Fans that participated in the photo session are sure to find their faces somewhere on the posters.
In addition to the event’s venue, Saitama Super Arena, the posters have also been put on display in many other parts of the city. The faces of both the fighters and the fans will become promote the event as they come together to become the “face” of the 2006 open weight grand prix final round, PRIDE FINAL CONFLICT.
