Redemption on TUF4 By Matt Serra Blog Entry

Chris Lytle moves onto the semis in a tough fight with Din Thomas. If you are wondering why you didn’t hear me yapping in the background during this fight, yelling out instructions and such, it’s because I was in a backroom awaiting my showdown with Shonie. Both fights were taped in the same day. Before we get to any of that, though, Marc Laimon is back.

Now, as you know, I’ve had my problems with Marc Laimon’s attitude in the past. That never changed while he was sitting in on our practice. At least in the experience of Team Mojo, he was by far the laziest of any of the trainers the UFC provided for us. His arrogance and condescending nature were nauseating. This exchange he had with Scott Smith is probably the best example I could think of:

Scott: Hey Marc, can you show something from the guard?
Marc: What do you want me to show you?
Scott: I don’t know, a submission maybe.
Marc: Which submission?
Scott: Any one, really, I’d like to add one to my ground game.
Marc: Well, pick one, when you know which one you want, tell me.

The way he dealt with Scottie was pretty typical of his interactions with our team. No one liked him as a trainer, but I can deal with a bad trainer. It’s terrible human beings I can’t stomach.

Now, before I get to our confrontation, allow me to make clear that all of this happened the night before the incident with Matt Hughes and GSP in the restaurant. Tricky editing, as usual, would lead you to believe that this was after the semifinal matchups had been decided. Matt Hughes was playfully trying to get me and Marc to roll jiu-jitsu with each other, and neither of us were biting. I jokingly told him maybe he could see that after the finale, and did my best Ace Ventura impression, yelling “CAN YOU FEEL THAT BUDDY?!” We all had a laugh about that.

Matt then asked Marc if he had seen the latest PPV where Hughes had defeated Royce Gracie in the main event. This led to Laimon sucking up to Matt and talking about how he called it all along, and how Royce was totally decimated and should never have gotten in the ring, and how Marc actually almost got into a fight in the parking lot on the way out because he was so fired up at seeing Royce lose, blah blah blah. Now, I’d held my tongue before, but at this point, I had had enough, and you saw what happened.

I said it before, and I’ll say it again, I have no problem with anyone saying Matt Hughes is a better fighter than Royce Gracie, or commenting on a fight, as long as you’re respectful about it. Laimon has no respect, for anyone, let alone the Gracie family, who brought jiu jitsu to the United States. Think about it, without the Gracies, Marc Laimon probably doesn’t have a job right now. Yet, still, he talks smack about how pathetic Royce looked. I may be a little biased regarding the Gracies considering I trained under the great Renzo Gracie, but his attitude would annoy me if he was talking about any fighter.

Look, fighting is not for everyone, and I understand that. However, if fighting is not for you, you should have a minimum amount of respect for the people who do fight, especially if you’re a world class [supposedly] trainer working inside the industry who knows how difficult it is to get to this level. As for his “it’s a free country” rationale, that is something a 12-year-old says. Maybe he learned it from the 12-year-old he almost got into a fight with in the parking lot after the HughesGracie fight. Marc Laimon is a joke, and I can’t believe I’ve spent so much energy typing about him. Let’s move on.

Shonie’s antics led to what amounted to a bad SNL skit from Rich Clementi and Jorge Rivera. “Fonie” Carter. C’mon! If I was Rich Clementi, and I had six weeks to think of something after being eliminated, I’d have been ashamed of myself. But that’s just me.

Shonie and I had buried the hatchet after nipping his training with Team No Love in the bud. We were totally cool heading into the fight, which was great, because I honestly like Shonie a whole lot. I’m glad we were friends going into our bout, though we’d have to suspend that friendship after we touched gloves to the final bell.

Going into the fight, I was thankful that Shonie was my opponent – it was a shot at redemption I wasn’t sure I’d ever get. Knowing Shonie and his flair for the dramatic, I would be looking for the spinning backfist when we were on our feet. Also, knowing from experience, he is a slippery fellow, like a wet fish in Speedos. As such, my plan was to work him over, gain top position, and strike from there and to be extremely patient in trying to apply submissions – I’d let those come to me.

Round 1 started and I tried to push pace. I thought I won the round early on, when I got him on the ground and started landing punches while I was on his back. I was hitting him with pretty clean shots, and Shonie looked rocked. When the fight got back to our feet, Shonie utilized his unorthodox striking method to land – you guessed it – that spinning backfist. I was looking for it going into the fight, but still got caught by it. In retrospect, it was a good thing because it served as a wakeup call for me – from that point forward, was looking for the unorthodox move from Shonie, because the only way he was going to get me down was by catching me off guard. Anyway, I felt like I won round the first four minutes and thirty seconds of the first round, and he won the last thirty seconds. If I were a judge, I’d have given the round to me.

Round 2 I felt I won pretty handily, and my conditioning helped me a great deal in doing so. I went for the inside leg trip that I got in the first round. When he pulled out, I just switched it to the opposite side for a smooth takedown.

Going into Round 3, I still felt pretty fresh, and I was determined to push the pace. The last thing I wanted to do was leave any doubt in the judges minds that I won this fight, so I made sure to apply pressure to Shonie at all times. I wanted all three rounds, and it seems that the judges agreed with me, punching my ticket to the finals on Nov. 11 LIVE from the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on Spike TV. It felt great to redeem the one knockout I’ve ever been dealt in my career, but I would definitely welcome a rematch with Mr. Carter down the road.

Serra vs. Lytle. Should be a great fight. I’ll do a preview of it going into the bout. In the meantime, check back next week as we take a look at the first middleweight semifinal.

UFC 67 Could this be the time for TUF Winners to have a title shot?

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

UFC 67 will be the 1st fight in 2007 for UFC. To start the new year who would you want to fight and do you think its time for the TUF winners to have a go at the title shot?

Yeah I know that The Ultimate Fighter 4 is getting a title shot, but what about season 1, 2 and 3. Its only fair, and where the hell is Bisping after his win? A light heavyweight matchup with Bisping vs Chuck Liddell would be great or even Bisping vs Griffin. Another great fight could be Sanchez vs Hughes. Cast your vote after the jump.

The Ultimate Fighter 5 Rumours TUF 5

Wednesday, September 6th, 2006

MMA weekly are reporting the rumour of Jens Pulver and BJ Penn to be the coaches in the next series.
Also saying that the format will be a set out of 16 lightweights (155lbs) 8 of which being UFC Vets and 8 being rookies.

i like the idea of there being a rematch between Pulver and Penn, which is the norm for the coaches to fight. But building up the lightweights even more? I think the lightweight division is stacked at the minute without throwing in another 16 fighters.
I wish they'd build up the heavyweights more. They did not get one worthwhile heavy out of TUF2. Why not have 8 lightweights and 8 Heavy's on the show? Angry

Sherdogs Guide to the Ultimate Fighter

Saturday, September 2nd, 2006

Its 6:15 p.m. Central Standard Time and I'm driving home like an Andretti on fire. College football starts tonight. I repeat, college football starts tonight! It's the most wonderful time of the year, plus my Dallas Cowboys are also on the tube so I'm a man on a mission.

While driving like a maniac, my mom's on the phone telling me about how excited she is for her first trip to Washington D.C. "We're going to all the monuments and then we'll probably go to Arlington and I also want to see the Library of Congress. …"

I keep giving her "uh huh's" and "that's nice's" until the car in front of me screeches and the brake lights are glowing.

In the middle of her sentence I watch a girl spin off the side of the Xterra in front of me. It hits me that I just saw a child get hit by a car. I mumble something to my mom and hang up. I pull over and rush over as this girl hops on one foot and I look down and realize that her foot was run over. I pick her up and take her over to the sidewalk and we sit down as she begins to sob uncontrollably.

I look down at her foot and see two white bones sticking out each side of the foot and her big toe is smashed flat with toe guts on each side; it looks almost fake.

I decide not to look down again and I try my best to distract her with dumb mindless questions and small pats on the back. The poor kid is more worried about her mom being pissed at her for running out in front of a car. Half of the time she cries out in Spanish so I throw a few "pobrasitas" her way and at least we both feel like we are trying to cope with the fact that her foot looks like someone took a claw hammer to it.

I try my best to comfort her but sincerity has never been my strong suit. We have a bonding moment as she grips my hand like her name was "Magnus" and she bites her jeans to get through the pain. I exchange nervous glances with the girl that ran over her foot. We agree that later we should both go get a drink. The cops show up and then the EMS and we hand her over to her visibly upset mother and they load her into an ambulance.

I shoot the breeze with some of the cops and then decide to head home. It's when I'm picking up the mail that the shakes begin. Those weird post-accident adrenaline shakes that make you feel like someone gave you a "Beijing Cocktail.”

I make it into my place and plop down for some football, but first I call my Mexican girlfriend and try to explain to her that I'm an American hero to the Mexican community. She's not totally convinced but she agrees to nominate me for "Gringo of the Year" if that actually exists anywhere.

Now for the next few hours I'm treated to arguably the best television this year since my Longhorns were in the Rose bowl in January. The Cowboys are on. Boston College almost gets upset. And GSP takes a tough one against B.J. Penn (Pictures) on Spike.

I should be in sports heaven but instead I can't quit thinking about how a 12 year old almost died in a split second stupid decision.

I don't mean to bum you kids out but crap that was weird sequence of events.

Anyway finally TUF comes on and I'm glad to have the distraction. It was rough to watch Edwin Dewees (Pictures) go through his bloodletting again but at least he hung tough and got a victory out of it.

This third episode begins with everyone griping about Shonie Carter (Pictures). Shonie's an odd duck and his constant need to entertain himself keeps annoying his housemates.

Shonie's shadowboxing in the pool; he's painting self-portraits and decorating clothes with a passion that would make your local homecoming "mum" maker proud. If you don't know what a mum is then just e-mail me and I'll explain it to you.

Team No Love's Jeremy Jackson (Pictures) laments that the losses his team has suffered is affecting their training. Jeremy is focused on during this episode, maybe to throw us all off the scent of who'll be fighting tonight. Jeremy explains that he thinks he will be picked to fight Din Thomas (Pictures) just do to Din's attitude and behavior. Jeremy thinks he can beat Din but he's looking to fight Chris Lytle (Pictures).

Lytle would be a tall order for anyone on this show since he's what we call a "tough cookie." Lytle is pretty much as well rounded and scrappy as a fighter you'll find anywhere and Jeremy wants the challenge.

Back at the house UFC 60 is put on the big screen and Georges St. Pierre (Pictures) comes over to watch it with the fellas. Last week I cracked wise on Georges's accent and half of Canada e-mailed me to say "sacre bleu" which is the equivalent of "shenanigans" or something of the sort. Anyway Georges watches with the guys as Matt dismantles Royce.

This fight shocked some people because they felt that Matt's strengths would play into Royce's game. Instead, Matt was able to use his power to overwhelm Royce and some of the TUF contestants were stunned. Matt Serra (Pictures), being Gracie reared was understandably distraught over seeing his mentor lose but chose to use it as motivation for his efforts on the show.

Back at the training facilities, Marc Laimon is brought in to teach some jiu-jitsu. Matt Serra (Pictures) isn't too happy to see Marc. Marc has cornered fights against Matt's coaching and heads may have butted. Matt doesn't like how Marc runs his mouth, specifically regarding Royce Gracie (Pictures) and especially since Marc's not a fighter.

Royce is arguably the reason all of us watch MMA and to have a jiu-jitsu guy disrespect him is especially insulting. Matt voices his displeasure at Marc's lack of fighting experience and the staff of Sherdog collectively tugs at their collars. HA!

Once again Jeremy Jackson (Pictures) is the focus as Randy Couture (Pictures) speaks of his strengths as a fighter. Dana White explains Jeremy's history with the UFC and they show highlights of his loss to Nick Diaz (Pictures).

Those monsters at Spike have tricked us since the teams get together and Team Mojo decides that Pete Spratt (Pictures) will take on Chris Lytle (Pictures). I gasp since these are two of my favorite fighters on the show. Lytle used to make me look stupid when I picked him to lose and he refused to do so. Pete's a Texan that I've met a few times and I love his style. While I'm thrilled to see them fight it just seems too soon. They both belong on the show but, hey, no matter who wins the loser will still stick around.

Some of the contestants feel that this will be a bad fight for Pete since these two have fought before and Lytle was able win by submission. Lytle explains that Pete has beaten tough guys and that it will be no cakewalk.

The fight begins and Chris immediately bum rushes Pete and puts him against the fence. The two are tied up for a while until Chris puts Pete on his back where Pete is out-matched. It doesn't take too long for Chris to get on top and sink a guillotine from the mount and Pete is forced to tap.

Pete is upset because he feels he's the better athlete and he's disappointed in his showing. He's right: he is the better athlete but Chris Lytle (Pictures) is just one of those fighters that are so skilled at all angles and has the intangibles to force wins.

I contemplate the fact that Lytle might be one guy to beat at 170 pounds and I flip back over in time to see Mike Vanderjagt miss his second field goal and my Cowboys are stuck with a tie. I let out a deep sigh and resign myself to the fact that at least I'm an American hero who helps injured children.

Ultimate Fight Night 6 Review

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

Alright, it’s that time again. We have a very nice Main Event fight, and some nice fights overall for free TV. As always, I will be bringing you the fights as I see them, and record them for all time on my trusty VHS tapes. I see BJM grew a beard and stuff.

THE FIGHTS:

Josh Koscheck vs. Jonathan Goulet(Welterweights)

Rd. 1:

A lot of circling, then some strikes and some nice kicks, a punch and some circling. Kos hits Jon hard and Josh gets a Guillotine choke, but fails to sink it. In half guard, this looks like a standard Kos lay-n-pray right now, though he’s throwing some punches, and Goulet is trying to get a better position. Goulet has Kos’s right arm locked up, then Kos gets posed up and Jon eats some punches and elbows. Kos’s arm is again locked up, and he’s still stuck in halfguard. Shit, Goulet gave up the back, and Kos drops a few punches. That’s a nice flurry. Appears that Jon taps? Apparently not, BJM stops the fight.

GAME, SET, MATCH- Koscheck WINS, TKO (4:10, Rd. 1)

Koscheck’s standup HAS improved ALOT since his TUF appearance. His ground also, it turns out it was NOT a Koschek lay-n-pray. nice to see a decisive victory for the guy.
He talks about MySpace, I tried getting him on on the first day of TUF and been re-applying every month or so and he never adds me. I’m kinda pissed. Oh, and yes, I do have a Myspace, but I also have a life.

Dean Lister vs. Yuki Sasaki(Middleweights)

Rd. 1:

I hate Steve Mazigatti…

Starts out with almost no action at all, then Dean shoots but fails. Throws an elbow, but then he’s against the fence. Slow action thus far. Steve separates them. Yuki goes for a cool punch, anf fails, lister kicks high, an echange of kicks and a punch exchange. Dean catches a kick, and SHOOTS, but fails again. And they hit the ground, dean hanging on like a monkey, and it’s DOWN again! Dean going for a RNC, but Yuki seems to be defending well. Dean throws some punches, and they start moving. AND DOWN AGAIN, courtesy of Dean. He throws some shots, trying to choke Yuki now, but Yuki still defending well. Dean on top throws some shots, then they roll over and over. Yuki pulls some fun stuff, and eats an elbow near the end of Rd. 1.

I score it: 10-9 Dean

Rd. 2:

They start with a nice exchange, and dean goes for another failed shoot. more exchanging of shots, and another botched takedown attempt followed with a punch. Lister screws up a shoot, and Yuki gets on top. It appears Dean’s going for a triangle, and Dean is throwing some elbows from the bottom. And then it’s a slow action, and Dean near has an armbar. But no, they fall back down, and has a triangle. It may only be time now. Yuki is eating some elbows, and is bound to screw up soon. Has an armbar, gets mounted, and hits back control. Yuki eats some punches. Standing again. Some nice pun ches by Sasaki on the feet, and the round ends with Dean eating shots.

I score it: 10-9 Dean, even with that finishing flurry by Yuki.

Rd. 3:

Srarts with a punch and kick from each of them, and lister tries a kick. Lister falls down, and stands up. Now they’re both just throwing, Yuki getting the better of the exchanges. Lister’s striking isn’t good. Lister going for another takedown on the fence. He’s starting to tire bad though. Sasaki is on top now, which is bad. But they don’t do anything. Though both stand again. and Sasaki punches hard and goes down. Stands up, Yuki keeps punching, Dean takedown to some reversals. On the fence, and they just stand there. Just standing, AND DOWN. Dean on the back, and then another stand against the cage. Lister breaks it with an elbow, and they throw a few lazy shots. Shoots, and against the fence they go and DOWN.

I score it: 10-9 Dean

My Total: 30-27 Dean

Judges score the fight: 30-27 Unanimous for Dean

DEAN WINS, 2-0 in UFC, 9-4 overall

Round three showed Lister’s cardio isn’t the best, but that’s OK, something for him to work on. Yuki has nice standup, nice TD defense, and a decent ground. Against Lister, to survive on the ground is some serious shit.

Chris Leben vs. Jorge Santiago(Middleweights)

Rd. 1:

shit,, it’s Herb…

Starts out with some circling, and a kick from Jorge. Chris lunges and misses, and another kick from jorge. Leben punches low, and now an exchange getting Leben in guard. Leben stands and falls back, avoiding an armbar. Side conteol for Leben, dropping shots hard. Then leben stands and throws some long shots. Leben back in guard, bleeding. Dropped an elbow, stands up. Leben kicks the legs, and falls back into Jorges guard. Throws some body shots, and get stood up. Leben is chasing Jorge with some shots, and they end up back in the middle. More chasing, and a kick from leben. Dodges a shot, and throws some of his own. Santiago on top on the ground. Chris is struggling for position, trying to sit up. Chris has him in half-guard. Still there at the buzzer.

I score it: 10-9 Leben. In my opinion, he just did more that round.

Rd. 2:

starts with chris throwing and Santiago tries to takedown. Doesn;t work, and another shot, Leben falls onto him and Herb stops after some punches.

LEBEN WINS, KO!!! (0:35, Rd. 2)

I dunno about this one, Chris’s ground still isn’t great. But a tough opponent he faced. And KO’d him. Not a bad comeback.

Joe Riggs vs. Jason Von Flue(Welterweights)(BONUS TELEVISED FIGHT)

Riggs stayed at welter…Huh I still hate Steve…

Rd. 1:

It starts slow, then Flue tries something stupid, and Riggs hits nicely. Riggs gets a kick and a fun takedown. A small ground struggly ensues, and gets Flue’s back. REVERSAL of positions, now Jason is in Joe’s guard. Joe gets a triangle locked, and that must hurt, but Jason taps.

JOE RIGGS WINS, TRIANGLE CHOKE TAPOUT!!! (2:01, Rd. 1)

I can’t believe Joe stayed at 170. I can’t believe it. But he looked nice tonight at this weight, so we’ll see. Flue has a fetish with ‘the finger’ or something…

Diego Sanchez vs. Karo Parisyan(Welterweights) (MAIN EVENT FIGHT)

Rd. 1:

We start out the first round with with Diego throwing punches, and then takes Karo down, Diego mounted and gets the back of Karo, and throws some punches to Karo’s head. More shots from Diego, and karo stands and they both stand, and then Karo takes Diego down, and falls into Diego guard. Upkick by Diego, connects to the face, then Karo drops some nice shots from- Diego on the back and they stand up again. Karo gets Diego on the fence and throws some punches and karo throws a nice Judo move, but they both up quick. And they both throw some shots and karo again gets Diego down and attempts some punches. Diego throws some elbows from the bottom, and back up. Karo throws a jab, and then a double jab. They both ate one there, and Karo follows with punches, as does Diego. and Diego connects a punch at the end of Rd. 1.

I score it: 10-9 Karo.

Rd. 2:

Starts with some circling and punches from karo. Nice stiff shots, and a head kick. Diego tries a shot, but is hit by more than he threw. A few more missed punches by both, and Karo slams Diego yet again. In halfguard, karo throws some punches and has a unique pass, both up and both down again fast. Karo again throwing some punches. Back up, and Diego throws punches. Then Diego eats one, and Diego gets Karo down, falls into the guard, and throws some body elbows. A few punches, more gravity-driven elbows to the body, he stands and falls with a punch or two. and they’re back up. A nice exchange, Diego getting the better of it. Then Karo shoots after some punches but Karo gets a North-south position, then Diego gets the back again.

I score it: 10-9 Karo

Rd. 3:

Starts with some immediate shots by both guys, and karo gets him against the fence. Karo throws a knee, and some missed punches by both. A couple connected. Uppercut, uppercut, some serious damage going to both of ‘em. Karo SLAMS Diego yet again. back up, and down. Diego has Karo’s back, a RNC!!! Nope, but mounted again Drops some shots, nice GnP. Diego’s on karo’s back, and they separate and karo gets Diego against the cage, then it reverses and they separate. Diego throws a bunch of shots, and so does Karo. Very nice connections, another toss to Sanchez on top. Body elbows, punches raining down. Karo is throwing shots from the bottom too, but they have little effect. More shots from both, more Gravity Elbows, punches… end of round

I score it: 10-9 Diego

My Total: 29-28 Diego

Judges Score the fight: 29-28 29-28 30-26 Unanimous Diego

WTF??? Who’s the retard that scored it 30-26? Someone shoot him, PLEASE. He’s the same retard, garunteed, that’s scored all the other fights so screwy.

that’s UFN 6, thanks alot for reading the review.

TUF 4 Fight REVIEW – Shonie Carter vs Rich Clementi

Monday, August 21st, 2006

Well, we got the first TUF 4 fight which should be very nice.

Shonie Carter vs. Rich Clementi

Rd. 1 :

The round opens with alot of nothing. Then more nothing, and then a punch from rich and a kick from shonie, into a kick by rich. Takedown by rich, dropping a couple of elbows. Back up on the fence. Shonie almost takes a knee to the face, still on the fence, then he punches for a separation. An exchange occurs, and Shonie connects with a kick afterward. another kick by Shonie, and more nothing. Then Shonie connects nice with a punch and a kick, Rich hits a kick as well. Another Shonie kick/Rich Punch . Shonie takes it to the ground, but gets caught in armbar position. He escapes, Shonie takes side control and drops some shots. Then he stands up and does nothing but kick the legs. Shonie takes a knee to the stomachand is trapped on the fence, taking punches. End round.

I say they both sucked here… 10-9 Shonie(BARELY)

This round DID NOT IMPRESS at all. Neither was willing to fully commit to anything. Starting to piss me off, and it’s only 5 minutes into this fight.

Rd. 2:

This round starts with another kick/punch, and rich takes Shonie down and mounts. Shonie though puts up a nice fight from the bottom and gets into another armbar position. And escapes again, shonie on top throwinf some shots. Rich holds him down nicely, but Shonie manages some body shots and head shots that might be doing some damage. They both throw shots from their respective positions, and they’re both eating some weaker shots. Shonie gets side control and knees, then north-south into another armbar position, and gets out. He’s back in Rich’s guard, bnut gets the back, as Rich sort of lays there struggling for a bit. And againl, Shonie has north-south and they’re up again. Shonie connects some shots and throws a head kick which is blockes. Rich is throwing knees from the Thai clinch, and then they exchange some shots and the buzzer sounds

I say: 10-9 Shonie… better this round.

This round was better, but still not that impressive to me. But yes, Shonie won the fight by the judges cards.

I hope the next one is better.

The Ultimate Fighter 4 ( TUF 4 ) What did you think?

Monday, August 21st, 2006

Hmmm, watched this last night. Its gonna take a few episodes to get used to the new system. No dedicated coaches (eh) It doesnt feel as competitive as the others. Was great when you had rivals like Tito and Shamrock always at each other.

1st fight wasnt great either, the highlight was spray painting the UFC logo. Lets hope things spice up in the up and coming episodes.

Im sure things will even out and will be addictive viewing.

Whats your thoughts? Post what you think here

2 Cage Rage Fighters in The Ultimate Fighter 4

Tuesday, August 8th, 2006

Chris Lytle is currently the Welterweight World Champion of Cage Rage and is appearing in the new season of The Ultimate Fighter 4. Joining Chris from Cage Rage is Jorge Rivera who fought Marcelo Azevedo in Cage Rage 13.

It will be good seeing more Cage Rage faces showing in the US. Micheal Bisping was a Cage Rage champion and won TUF 3.

Good luck to Jorge and Chris in TUF 4.
